We'd all feel the same if we were caught in this bind |
Like Indiana Jones, most people harbor a dislike for snakes. They're scaled reptiles that slither around and have big fangs. They also can be extremely dangerous due to venoms and toxins in them, as well as their natural "predator" instincts. But currently, a certain species of snake, the Burmese Python, have been causing trouble in the Everglades and in swampy areas across the United States.

"Can I have a bite?" Ssssaid the Sssnake |
These snakes are natural predators and extremely fast, normally being found in Asia. But, in the United States, people like having it as a pet. There snakes are
HUGE and can grow up to 20 feet long, which is a hassle to own and feed. So after a while, people release them into the wild. The snakes then find an area they enjoy and start their reign of terror. Mainly in places like the Everglades in Florida, these snakes have been a nuisance by messing up the food chain and by overthrowing the top animal and becoming the "big kahuna" of the swamp. Lots of animals in swamps like possums and marsh rabbits and even more have decreased in population by up to 99% because of the snakes. Plus, because of the snake's natural stealth capabilities, its almost impossible to be hunted down and caught. These snakes have invaded the swamps across the United States and are slowly overturning the natural order of things.

How can your prevent the snakes? Could we just not sell or breed this animals anymore? We have to do something if the snakes are eating the animals who live in the swamps, 99% gone.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is that the Burmese Snake is an animal that comes from somewhere, so in that area it's part of the food chain. So if we stop it from breeding, it would cause a ripple effect in the eco system like a Rube Goldberg, and it may not end to pretty.

Deletemaybe we could try to keep them in an isolated are and let them starve
ReplyDeleteThat could work, but due to the fact that they are very quick and hard to capture, as well as very very sneaky, it would be hard to contain them.
DeleteI really like your introduction and pictures! Snakes as an invasive species are a big problem. They have been known to attack and fight with the local gators. These battles usually don't end well for either side.
ReplyDeleteThat's defiantly true. Here's a video even of a battle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfYAj1k9uZM
DeleteThis is really interesting. The thing about Indiana jones was funny. I think that if we isolated the snakes and kept the somewhere else the small animals like rabbits would stay alive.
ReplyDeleteIt could work, but the idea of isolating a whole group of one animal in an area is inhumane, even if it's to save other species, also, like I said on another comment, the snakes are naturally quick and sneaky, so it would be hard to capture them in the first place to even isolate them :/
DeleteThis is a huge problem, especially with the excessive amount of wildlife dying each year. In the article you attached it stated that these Burmese pythons are causing a disturbance in the food chain, this can be solved a few ways. But I believe the catalyst of this problem is the people who believe breeding these pythons in their homes and setting them free when they become to much to handle is a careless way figuring out the problem. In any problem you cannot just discard the issue and hope everything turns out fine. If we can find a way to keep these pythons out of the Everglades and into maybe zoos that might restore the wildlife and food chain.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. The best solution isn't containment, but proper information and guidance to those who are letting these snakes free and have them for pets, who don't understand the problems they will cause in the future.

DeleteWe should put the snakes in a separate area so they don't eat any thing bad and make it so the can't get away. That way nobody gets eaten and everyone lives happily ever after in a beautiful world. Good night.
ReplyDeleteI wish the world were like that, but like they sang in the Lion King, there sadly IS a Circle of Life. But, these animals aren't supposed to be in this area. But since they're very very sneaky, it'll be a hard task to capture them and put them into one area.

Deletei think one way we could stop this would be to ban these types of snakes from even being allowed to have as pets. by making this illegal, we could greatly limit the amount of this species being let out into the wild and screwing up other food chains.
