The U.S is killing it's self with Obesity. Millions of people are slow killing themselves starting from a young age. Overeating and not doing enough physical activity is causing heart disease, high blood sugar and even death. The population of Obesity in children and adults is rising please take care of your body because no one else will do it for you.

Your right, we really need to take care of our body's. Obesity can start from young age and can really affect you later in life. The U.S should really help make the environment more healthy for the citizens. If they can make a healthy environment than we can prevent kids and people from dying because of obesity.
ReplyDeleteYes! This is very important! In fact, two very large problems in the US are both starvation and obesity. Maybe if the government set a standard for food products, so if something had too much of a bad ingredient in it, the product couldn't be sold? Or maybe we just need to lower the cost of healthy food (I say this with Whole Foods in mind)?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Anne, because the price of healthy food is so much more than a cheap soda. But if we made the companies charge less for their products then they might go out of business. This issue goes hand in hand with poverty, but if we made healthy food more eaisly available then maybe 1/3 of the children wouldn't be obese.
DeleteYou make a very good point and it is true, it's nobody elses fault but your own for being over weight. This is a hard problem to solve since many people are not willing to excercise, as well as many people can not afford healthy foods and/or they don't know what they're eating. I think it would help if maybe there was some kind of way to label foods that are approved as "healthy" since many people simply dont read nutrition labels and therefore don't know what they're eating.
ReplyDeleteYou make a very good point and it is true, it's nobody elses fault but your own for being over weight. This is a hard problem to solve since many people are not willing to excercise, as well as many people can not afford healthy foods and/or they don't know what they're eating. As it says in the article "The dietary and physical activity behaviors of children and adolescents are influenced by many sectors of society," I think it would help if maybe there was some kind of way to label foods that are approved as "healthy" since many people and kids don't read nutrition labels. Or maybe someone could make a group that kids and parents could go to to learn how to cook healthy, easy, meals with simple affordable ingredients.
DeleteI agree with a lot of what you're saying, but I don't think that this problem is as simple to solve as it seems. According to this article: http://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/why-people-become-overweight, people's likeliness and proneness to obesity is sometimes "influenced by a combination of genes and environment." I think you're right, though. Everyone will be a lot better off when they start eating healthier and exercising, but I don't know what we could do to "solve" genetics. I don't know, just something to think about.
DeleteThe companies you produce and manufacture unhealthy foods ate very powerful and have strong control of the government as well as American citizens. GMOs especially are leading to many health issues, and it is important to buy foods without those ingredients. You are absolutely right, health has to be our choice, yet it can be hard for poorer part of society, who cannot afford good food because it is overpriced. They then are forced to turn to obesity causing foods. Have you thought about any ways to change this using science?
ReplyDeleteAlso; like Allison said, people do not know what they are eating!! I believe that health education is required and is a very big step in improving the deteriorating health of Americans.
ReplyDeleteIn order to prevent obesity we must use technology to educate people on excersise and healthier foods. Often time healthier can be more expensive and less accessible for families in less wealthy communities so we must make this more accessible.
ReplyDeletethey did a study in stanford that said in 50 years one in three people will be obese.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right obesity in America is a very big issue that as citizens of the U.S. We need act seriously it's our bodies and our children's bodies and we need to be mindful and aware of what we put into our bodies. Eating well and healthily is very vital to living a long happy life. More people should have access and knowledge about food and how to be healthy.
ReplyDeleteCeleste you have a very good point, most kids today eat what they are given no questions asked. This is not a healthy or wise choice of how to go through life. We need to find ways for kids to understand what they are putting in their bodies and maybe restrict the constant access of junk food. Today many kids live off junk food, and that may be a problem to why students do not have enough energy to participate fully in school. As we can see everything connects with each other. The healthier foods you eat the more energy you may have to do things that are important.
ReplyDeleteThis is a extremely important issue in our modern world and kids need to be taught in an early age about what food can do to your body. We also have to make healthy foods less money because McDonald's and fast food are like 3 dollars where green foods are much more expensive, and for low class citizens it's super hard to pay for foods like that.
ReplyDeletePeople should take care of there body because dying simply because of over eating should really not be a problem. I think a way to help this problem is to have a class in school just like the sex Ed unit but instead of talking sex the teacher could talk about how eating junk can kill you.
ReplyDeleteThis is so true I read about a little kid weighing 100 pounds! This is rediculous because some people like you said are killing themselves by eating too much and others are dying of starvation right next to each other. This is so terrible and it is happening so much now. I think the best way to fix this is for people to eat healthy and exercise.
ReplyDeleteIn the article it says "Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years." Yet our education in this subject has developed quite a bit since the 1900s. The issue of obesity could possibly be due to the availability of food, not necessarily the lack of knowledge. Food these days is so easily accessible to those with wealth, and the less fortunate are finding it cheaper to buy the more unhealthy foods, which is not helping this dilemma.
ReplyDeleteWe here in America just have to make an effort to eat healthier don't complain about being fat its your own fault.

DeleteI totally agree with you, people are literally killing themselves by eating fast food from around five companies that are controlling the food market. I agree with Quincy and believe that in 50 years one in three people will be obese. People really need to make better choices about what they eat or they will suffer the consequences.
ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot of people above me: both educating people about their food and encouraging people to exercise from a young age is important. People don't need to go to a gym to get good exercise; they can easily go outside and go for a run. Adults and children both need to know what is in the food they buy and how it affects them. I also think that the companies making these unhealthy foods need to find a healthier substitute for the ridiculous amount of sugars and fats found in the products. It will take a lot of effort, money, and education to solve the obesity issue, but if we don't solve it, then everyone's going to end up like the people in Wall-E. :) Interesting article to think about!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mikaere's comment about Wall-E! With this issue of nutritious food being too expensive which leads to obesity, our current addiction to technology being in every detail of our lives, and the extreme desire by lots of scientists to explore space, it is very plausible that such scenes would be possible. I saw in the article that it said 70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which makes me remember an article posted by Max-MA that I commented on a day or so ago. Could these two issues be connected?
DeleteObesity is a known issue. Everybody should be educated about obesity as a disease, because not everybody takes it seriously. The more people know about how your eating/exercise habits affect you and your life span, the more people will care about what they put into their body
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Alison. That nutritious food is very expensive so poor people accent afford it so they have to but cheep unhealthy food. Americans are so addicted to technology that they barely exercise. In your article it stated that out of 70% of children that suffer obesity 1/6 of then go through cardiac disease.
ReplyDeleteIt's terrible how many people are obese. All the time we play the newest video game or check the newest trend in snapchat we should be getting excised or a better diet. People in this country see a burger that is one dollar vs a 10 dollar organic burger. Which will they choose? The people who are wealthy enough are going to bye the organic one, but anyone poor or in need of money will buy the cheap burger. What we need to focus in America is how we balance our diet.
ReplyDelete"please take care of your body because no one else will do it for you" I know in certain places there are laws not allowing big soft drinks to be sold to solve this problem but is it really the sodas fault? Or that bag of chips or donut YOU decided to eat? We need to stop outlawing stupid things like junk food and start taking care of ourself . It's not the governments job to take care of all our health habits. Remember you control what you eat.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this and understand that many people are not even aware of this issue. If you look around, there have been no PSAs about this issue and why not if it is so strongly affecting the US. What I think is that we should make the issue public, otherwise doctors will be overwhelmed with how many people are showing up in their office with heart disease. Promoting healthy habits will potentially eliminate obesity in America.
